Tips to Protect Yourself from Phishing/Scams

If you’re beginning to think about applying for internships, jobs after graduation, or even summer employment, remember to thoroughly review any potential employer who has contacted you or posted a position on an online job board such as Husky Career Link.  The following tips will help you to weed out potential scams and phishing schemes:

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  Trust your instincts!
Do not respond to emails or phone calls asking for identifying information such as account numbers, passwords, social security, or driver’s license numbers.
Avoid any organization that wants to send you a check to cash or deposit into an account, or that wants you to send money to them. If you find yourself in this situation, do not cash or deposit anything, and do not send any money.  Cease contact with the organization.
Watch for contact information that seems strange such as email domains that do not match the website, phone numbers in a different state than the employer address, etc.
